Good Agricultural Practices Training and Farm Tour in April

The week of April 18th will feature two important learning opportunities for agricultural producers. On Monday April 18th Hal Kneen of OSU Extension will be providing a full day of Good Agricultural Practices ( GAP, i.e. food safety) training in Chesterhill, OH.

1) At 9:00 am Hal will lead a food safety farm walk at Joe Hershberger’s farm located at 7385 SR 555, Chesterhill Ohio 43728. This session is open to interested farmers and will provide an opportunity to see and discuss ways to implement food safety practices on our farms.

2) From 1:30 to 4:30 pm Hal will be conducting an Ohio State University Food Safety training. This training qualifies participants for the educational requirements of GAP certification under the recently developed Ohio Produce Marketing Agreement. This training has a cost of $40 dollars by OSU. Through food safety educational funding Rural Action is able to pay $20 for the first 30 participants, making the cost $20. Please RSVP if you wish to attend. This presentation will be at the Marion Community Center, 7474 College St. Chesterhill, Ohio 43728. This will be a non-electronic training utilizing paper “flip charts.”
We feel that this is a great opportunity and encourage CPA farmers to attend. It will allow us to continue to strongly market the food safety and quality of our produce.

On Wednesday April 20th Joni Hershberger, 5400 Tabor Ridge Rd. Stockport, Ohio 43787 will be hosting a CPA growers farm tour. Guest speakers will be Brad Bergefurd from OSU Extension, Fred Finney and David Raber from the Mt. Hope Produce Auction. This session will last from 9:00am till 2:00pm and will allow for a broad discussion of ways to improve both our crops, and our Produce Auction.

Please write or call if you wish to attend the GAP certification training. We think this GAP training is a valuable opportunity to show that our Auction wants to be a leader on good food safety practices, and therefore attract more customers. All of these events are open to anyone wanting to attend, please spread the word to anyone who you think might be interested.
