Americorp Member Updates - Monday Creek Restoration Project

Sarah Drerup, Monday Creek Restoration Project Americorp Member

During the event at Robinson Cave in New Straitsville on May 22nd, I instructed students at Ohio University on the effects of coal mining on the environment. Not only was I able to share my knowledge, but I also learned about the work of two Ohio University classes to understand the culture and history surrounding local coal mining. The students wrote songs, sewed quilts, and compiled a book about labor practices, the first mining union, and the history of industrialization. The afternoon ended with an engaging talk by local historian Cheryl Blosser on the history of New Straitsville and the other towns in the Little Cities of Black Diamonds region. It was rewarding to be a part of such an exceptional event
