Ohioans for Health, Environment, and Justice Seeking a Board of Directors - Now Accepting Nominations!

The statewide, grassroots alliance Ohioans for Health, Environment and Justice (OHEJ) is seeking nominees to its board of directors from the southeast region of Ohio. The OHEJ’s vision is that Ohio will be “a place where people have the right to decide the destiny of their own communities, and where the environment and the economy are healthy, and support the health, safety and well-being of all citizens.”

OHEJ is working to empower the people of Ohio through education and citizen action to create environmental, economic, and social justice for their communities.

OHEJ’s goals include surveying the needs of local communities that OHEJ could meet; supporting the right of local communities facing environmental threats to protect themselves; and supporting the right of local communities facing environmental threats to create the community they want. OHEJ focuses on communities that ask for assistance and want help to achieve OHEJ’s goals, with a strong focus on communities for which environmental injustice is a critical issue.

Environmental justice is both an idea and a set of activities that focus on those communities that receive a greater and disproportionate share of the burden of environmental problems, often because they have less power and affluence than their neighbors.

If you would like to be nominated for the board as a representative of Southeast Ohio, find out more about OHEJ, or know someone who might be interested, please contact Michelle Decker at Rural Action, 740-767-4938 or e-mail to michelle@ruralaction.org.

Deadline for nominations is February 1, 2010.
