Ohio’s Sherrod Brown to head Senate Agriculture Committee

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown will head the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Hunger, Nutrition, and Family Farms, according to a press release Monday July 13. The committee is responsible for overseeing legislation involving domestic food assistance, safe and sustainable agriculture, local and healthy food initiatives and improving school and childhood nutrition programs.

“This subcommittee will determine how we can continue to work with our nation’s farmers to address nutrition and hunger issues,” said Brown after his appointment. “As chair of the committee, I look forward to addressing how agriculture can be part of the solution to some of our nation’s important challenges.”

What does this mean for Ohio? According to representatives from the Senator Brown’s office, “This new subcommittee will enable Senator Brown to conduct hearings on issues of importance to Ohio as well as hold field hearings in Ohio. “

Brown is the first Ohioan to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee in more than 40 years. We at Rural Action congratulate Senator Brown and look forward to hearing about developments in legislation and policy surrounding today’s critical agricultural issues. Seeing his past work on food security we feel he will be a strong advocate for Ohio.
