The Huff Run Watershed
Mineral City, Ohio

As part of their mission to educate regional communities about the importance of water quality, the Huff Run Watershed Restoration Project holds a multiday educational event every year aimed at children. This year, classes of children will be coming from Bell Herron, Tusky Valley, Sandy Valley, and Sherrodsville to visit stations throughout the Huff Run Watershed that will teach them about fish collection, macroinvertebrates, restoration projects, water quality testing, and enviroscapes.

This annual event is made possible through volunteers. Anyone interested in helping out or teaching a class should contact Amber Leasure-Earnhardt (amber@ruralaction.org). You can also call the Huff Run Offices for more information (330.859.1050).



Trimble Township Farmers’ Market – Opening Day!

Dedication of the Shawnee Steel Slag Leach Bed

The Monday Creek Restoration Project will be celebrating the official unveiling of their latest project. In conjunction with Little Cities of Black Diamonds, who will be dedicating their Ohio historical marker for Robinson’s Cave. Lunch to follow in New Straitsville. Rural Action’s 2009 Annual Meeting

Rural Action will be holding our 2008 Annual Meeting at the Eclipse Company Store. This year our keynote speaker will be Wes Jackson, internationally renowned agricultural scholar and author who is also the president of The Land Institute in Salina, Kansas. We will also be announcing the winners of our 2009 Sustainability Awards!

Talking Forest Medicine Trail Opening

The United Plant Savers are celebrating the opening of their Talking Forest Medicine Trail, which will offer 10 miles of self-guided nature education through 1200 acres of herb-rich forests. This event will offer guided tours of the Medicine Trails, classes by notable herbalists, dedications of medicinal trees in the region, and a UpS membership meeting. Lunch will be available from local vendors – dinner is on your own, though. Overnight camping is available by reservation.

Horse Logging Workshop

Rural Action will be hosting a Horse Logging Workshop for landowners, and all others, who are interested in this “green alternative” to mechanized practices. Participants will meet at Fox Lake at 9:30 AM for parking, and will then be shuttled out to Chuck Atkins property for a demonstration of horse-logging. Lunch on-site, which will be followed by a tour of the Flournoy’s property.
