Forest Watch Zaleski Hike

Sunday, March 15
11:00 AM
HDL Center Parking Lot (carpool)
Zaleski State Park (hiking)
Athens, Ohio

Join the Buckeye Forest Council as they hold their first Forest Watch hike to view areas of Zaleski State Forest that the state is planning to sell off for logging.

With the ice storms this winter, an increase in salvage logging operations are predictable, with the resulting roads, soil and stream impacts from erosion, de facto public timber giveaways to private corporations, and further degradation of what remains our best opportunity for recovery of contiguous forest habitat in Ohio. They will discuss the role of forest fires in our eastern forest ecosystems as we monitor the management activities of the Department of Forestry.

Local carpool leaving Athens from the HDL parking lot, 200 West Union St. 11:00 AM we will wait around then head to the Zaleski and hike in one of the timber sales presented in the Open House last fall. The proposed sale is located along the Moonville Tunnel rail-trail.

Those attending are encouraged to bring digital cameras and/or GPS mobile units. For more information, contact Matt Peters ( or call him (740.797.4319).
