Sustainable Agriculture

The following is a message from our friends at the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC):

The U.S. Senate is debating and voting on amendments to the massive economic recovery bill on Thursday and Friday – possibly into Saturday. Several farm and rural amendments deserve strong support. Please lend your support by urging both of your Senators to support the following amendments.

You can dial (202.224.3121) and ask to be connected to the offices of your Senators. Once connected, leave a message with the person answering the phone telling them you are a constituent and urging support for the Nelson rural micro-enterprise, Feingold farm loan, and Harkin-Thune-Johnson energy amendments to the economic recovery bill. After you call, pass this message on to others too!

We’d also like to give you a little bit of background on two of those amendments:
  • The Neslon amendment would increase funding for the Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program (RMAP) and is being sponsored by Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Small businesses are a key element of job growth in rural communities, and RMAP will provide small loans, training and technical assistance to help these small businesses start-up.
  • The Feingold amendment targets farm loan funding to new and existing family farms, rather than to overexpansion of sectors experiencing low farm prices.
Take a minute out of your day, and make a call that could make a difference.
