The Good News

A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains

This Friday (February 13) at 10:00 PM, ABC News will air a one-hour special with Diane Sawyer about impoverished regions in the Appalachian Mountains - specifically coal mining communities in Kentucky. We encourage our readers to take the time to watch this powerful newscast about areas in Appalachia that are often overlooked by .

We would also like to mention that our friends at the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED) served as a background source for Diane Sawyer when she was researching the piece. Jason Bailey, who serves as the research and policy director at MACED, recently wrote about the need to extend a helping hand to coal communities in Kentucky as the state begins to restructure its energy programs in the wake of clean energy initiatives:

For over a hundred years, those laboring and living with coal have helped power the nation’s growth while bearing the brunt of coal’s environmental and health impacts...There must be greater financial and other support to help miners and mining communities begin the transition to a stronger and more diverse economy.

This may or may not be a flattering review of Appalachia, and that's one thing to think about while viewing the program. Did they just want to show what isn't working or the caricatures of our region? Folks like to pull the heart strings without sending us the resources we need to invest differently for more sustainable economies.
