The Good News

Fundraising Breakfast Successful
By Jordan Vincent, AmeriCorps VISTA

Last Friday, we held our annual Fundraising Breakfast at the Athens Community Center. The staff and volunteers at Rural Action would like to give a big thanks to everyone who was at the breakfast – we had a great turnout this year with more than 150 people attending. Thanks to the extremely generous donations of our members and supporters, we raised over $13,395 on the day of the breakfast. In addition to these up-front donations we also received several new members to our Giving Society, with their pledges totaling $72,550 over the next five years.

All told, we were able to raise $85,945! This money is vital to the work of our organization, and will help support our future projects. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Wil Chandler of Athens Realty for sponsoring the event, as well as Donkey Coffee, the Herbal Sage Tea Company, and Hyacinth Bean Florists for their in-kind donations. Thank you also to Bill Carroll for emceeing the event, and to Mitch Farley and Ronda Clark for their kind words about our organization.

Below is a slideshow that was shown at the breakfast highlighting the work that Rural Action and its partner organizations have done in Youth Outreach during the last year. The video includes audio interviews with both facilitators and young people who took part in the programs. The programs highlighted, in order as they appear, are:

  • Youth Art on High Street: renovating storefronts in Glouster
  • The Amesville Superheroes: improvements to the Amesville Park
  • Youth Organic Gardeners: helping children grow their own food
  • The Sunday Creek Watershed Day Camp: teaching young people the principles of conservation, while celebrating their environment
