Trimble Township Farmers’ Market Draws a Crowd

By Tom Redfern, Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator

Local farmers, supported by Rural Action Sustainable Agriculture (RASA) and its partners, gathered on Friday, August 22 for the first Trimble Township Farmers’ Market.

RASA has been working closely with Community Food Initiatives (CFI) and ACEnet in an exciting partnership designed to help with the return of a local produce market to the Glouster area.

Those efforts came to fruition last week, with the first market drawing over 50 customers and four vendors. Fresh, locally frown produce, such as sweet corn, eggs, zucchini, and cantaloupe, were quickly snatched up by eager buyers.

Anna Marie Simpkins, a farmer from Millfield, was especially pleased with the market, “I saw practically everybody I knew,” she said. “And I was very happy with the amount of produce I sold.”

In preparation for the market, RASA staff conducted a community-wide survey during June and July of 2008. Although there has been a Glouster farmer’s market for the past two years, the information from the survey indicated that there was enough interest to create another market in Trimble.

That information was, in turn, presented to partners and prospective vendors at a meeting held at the Rural Action Trimble offices on August 12. At that meeting, three potential vendors from the area (along with representatives from RASA, ACEnet, and CFI) agreed on times, dates, and the location of the market.

The market is currently set to run through October 24, every Friday between 4 PM and 6 PM. The market will be located at Trimble Park, across from Kroger on State Route 13.

Last week the market attracted over 30 buyers, but more produce vendors are still needed. Anyone interested in selling at the Trimble Township Farmers’ Market is encouraged to contact Ronda Clark of CFI (740.593.5971), or Tom Redfern of RASA (740.767.4938), for more information.

Additionally, anyone interested in beginning a farmers’ market in the Southeastern Ohio area should contact the Rural Action Sustainable Agriculture staff for information on how we, and our networks, can help you (740.767.4938).
