Volunteer Opportunities

Submitted by Emily Boyer,AmeriCorps*VISTA with the Sunday Creek Watershed Group

OK, it's not exactly free, but it is an easy way to volunteer AND compete for a gas voucher worth $40.

The Sunday Creek Watershed Group will hand over a $40 gas voucher to the person selling the most tickets to their 5th Annual Benefit Dinner. The Dinner will be held at the Moose Lodge in Glouster on September 22. Doors open at 4 p.m., and food is served at 4:30.

The dinner (of cookout fare: hamburgers, hotdogs. etc.) will raise money for a joint project between Sunday Creek and the Youth Act program. Funds will help buy clay-pottery trashcans for the town of Glouster. There will also be a Chinese Auction at the Dinner.

If you'd like to compete to win free gas, contact Emily Boyer to arrange a time to pick-up a packet of tickets. She may be reached at 740-767-2225 or The tickets will sell for $6 or #3.50 for children 5-12 (under 5 is free). The contest ends September 10 and the winner will be awarded the gas voucher at the Dinner. You may also volunteer your services or help provide food and prizes for the Dinner and auction: contact Emily for more info.

Tickets are on sale now. Get you packet of tickets today and start selling to win gas money!

Free gas? I say you can't afford NOT to sell tickets!

Around the Region: Niches Volunteer Week & Stuart's Summer Music Festival

This weekend you'll have the rare opportunity to stay for free at Niches Retreat, a rustic nature preserve and retreat nestled on some 300 acres near McArthur. In exchange for the stay in a peaceful cabin, participate in "Volunteer Week." From July 13 to 16, help finish a new cabin (called Quetzal cabin), put the finishing touches on a bath house, move plants, trim trails and roadways, and more. Please bring a potluck dish to share (or food to cook a dish). Please RSVP to Sara at 740-596-4288.

This Saturday is the 3rd Annual Nelsonville Art & Music Festival featuring performers The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Brave Combo, Erin McKeown, Hillbilly Idol and Bakelite 78. Volunteers are needed! In exchange for a three hour shift, you'll get to see the bands for free - a $20 value! Please call the Stuart's Opera House office at 740-753-1924 if you are interested in volunteering. Shifts are available in the beer garden, at the front gate, and at the merchandise tent. Visit for a schedule and info on the performers.
