Huff Run 5K "Run for the Watershed"
By Chris Tomazic, AmeriCorps*VISTA for Media

Lace your running shoes and limber-up your muscles, the Huff Run Watershed Restoration Partnership will host a 5K run/walk on August 19, as a part of the Mineral City Party in the Park.

The Huff Run Watershed Restoration Partnership (HRWRP) is a community-based group that works to improve water quality and enhance wildlife habitat within the Huff Run watershed. The 14.1 square mile watershed is polluted from coal mining, sewage, illegal dumps and oil and gas extraction. The Run/Walk will benefit pollution control and reduction projects as well as HRWRP's youth outreach programs, the Environmental Learning Outreach Program and the Environmental Explorers Club. Both of these programs strive to create a greater sense of sustainability within the watershed.

Race day, Saturday, August 19, is also the "Mineral City Party in the Park." It will feature, live music, vendors, food, games, a car show, a small petting zoo, a kiddie tractor pull and other events.

Registration and start/finish of the races are at the Mineral City Park on the corner of St. Rt. 800 and Grant Street. The 5K course is relatively flat and parallels Huff Run for much of the race. The Fun Run is a mile long course along the same route as the 5K run.

Awards will be given to overall winners and placing racers in each age category (8 categories by age). The first 40 participants to register receive a free t-shirt. Entry fees are $10 for individuals, $20 for families and $50 for teams.

Registration begins at 6 in the evening. The 5K starts at 7 p.m. and the walk at 7:10. Registration forms may be sent in by mail before race day. Forms may be downloaded at View pictures from last year's race at
