Date Set for Annual Sustainability Festival
Submitted by Tom Redfern, Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator

The Seventh Annual Athens Area Sustainability Festival will be held this year the weekend of September 28, 29, and 30. The Festival will be using a new venue this year. For the first six years of its existence, the Festival has been held at the Athens County Fairgrounds. This year, for the first time, the Festival will be held on City of Athens land at the end of East Park Drive in East State Street Park.

"The new venue does present challenges," said John Knouse, a member of the coordinating committee. "We have to provide sanitary facilities, water supply and electrical supply that were already on-site at the fairgrounds. We hope to provide the electricity from photovoltaics as much as possible."

As in years past, the Festival will feature exhibits, food, children's activities, and music, and, most especially, a great variety of educational workshops dealing with sustainability issues. In addition, the Third Annual Athens Sustainability Documentary Festival will run concurrently at the same site, showing documentaries relating to sustainability.

This year, for the first time, the Festival will offer free booth space to qualifying nonprofits.

"We hope to get as many area nonprofits as possible represented at the Festival this year," Knouse said.

The Festival will kick off Athens Sustainability Awareness Week, which will also feature activities at Ohio University and at other area institutions, and which will close a week later with the Ohio Solar Tour, sponsored by Green Energy Ohio.
