Business Spotlight

Rural Action is sustained by the support of our members, and we are pleased to count many local businesses and organizations in our membership role. To show our appreciation for their support of Rural Action's work towards a self-sustained region and in recognition of their own work in sustainable development, we share their vision, mission and action in this Business Spotlight.

The Farmacy is an Athens-based business that needs little introduction. Since 1970, The Farmacy has been a source for natural products free of chemicals and unprocessed or minimally processed foods.

The Farmacy opened its doors as the natural foods movement was first sweeping across America, a time when the population became concerned about the refined sugars, artificial colors, hydrogenated oils and artificial flavors in their groceries. The Farmacy's response has been to offer whole, unprocessed (and hard-to-find) grains, nuts and dried fruits, often available in bulk. In addition, a selection of organic and locally grown products are also available. The Farmacy also operates a natural foods Deli that makes fresh food daily for dine-in or carry-out.
The Deli and carry-out.

The Farmacy has seen it's share of success. It has moved once (to its current location) and has expanded twice since then. Tom Zano of The Farmacy recognizes this as a sign that the community appreciates its services. "This community has always supported our efforts to provide goods and services that will promote natural health and well-being," says Tom, "just as we support those trying to achieve or maintain better health by eliminating harmful or toxic chemicals or utilizing supplements to meet nutritional needs."

"We educate people to the possibilities of excellent health by taking responsibility for oneself. We provide the information, foods and supplements for people to maintain superior health and well-being. If people’s health is improved, I believe they will be more active and function better in the communities of which they are a part, and thus be more productive and responsible citizens."

Drop by The Farmacy to pick-up some groceries, or visit the Deli for lunch or a snack. You'll also find a community bulletin board outside front door with fliers of events happening around town. Hours of operation are 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM daily Monday thru Saturday. The Deli is open from 11 AM to 2 PM for lunch, but take-out is available from our refrigerated case anytime during store hours. Many low-fat, vegan, Ethnic and vegetarian choices, as well as all-fruit smoothies made to order, are available in the Deli.
