Holiday Open House at Stuart’s

Each year about this time, staff, volunteers and supporters of Rural Action gather for an evening of merry making. This year, our Holiday Open House will be at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville. The event happens Friday, December 1 from 4-7 p.m. Come out for a pleasant evening with live music, refreshments and the company of Rural Action aficionados.

’Tis the Season to Buy and Give Local

By Chris Tomazic, AmeriCorps*VISTA for Media Development

Now is the time of year when holiday gift lists are being made and checked twice. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the season, local products are often overlooked in favor of nationally branded products. This year, Rural Action is collaborating with local producers and non-profits to encourage residents to explore local gift options.

On December 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Rural Action will host a local holiday bazaar at Stuart’s Opera House. The “’Tis the Season to Buy and Give Local” Event will feature local producers and live music. Pre-made gift baskets as well as baskets to fill while shopping will be available. The event will coincide with Nelsonville’s Towne Center Christmas Parade.

Candi Withem, Human Resources Director at Rural Action and an organizer of the event, sees the event as part of Rural Action’s mission. “A major focus of Rural Action’s mission is to support local economic development in sustainable ways,” said Withem. “What better way to influence the economy of our region than to support products made and produced right here in Appalachia Ohio.”

In addition to the vendors, local non-profits will also be at the bazaar to encourage support for their organizations. Donation jars for each non-profit and wish lists of needed items will be prominently displayed.

Going local this holiday does more than just support the region’s economy. Local products have a flair that national products often lack. “Vendors like Casa Nueva, Jerry Rockwell Dulcimers and AceNet Ventures offer excellent products at competitive prices,” said Withem. “At the ‘Tis the Season Bazaar, you can purchase a unique quality gift -not just another ‘something’ that everyone else has.”

Sustainability Expert to Discuss Model Communities
Submitted by Sara Peach, AmeriCorps*VISTA for Rural Renewal

An expert in international sustainable development and eco-villages will be speaking at the Athens Public Library Tuesday, December 12 at 7 p.m. Hollister Knowlton, who gave up her car and became a vegan in 1994 for environmental, social, and animal justice reasons, will make a presentation about sustainable communities in Colombia and Costa Rica. Knowlton's talk is sponsored by the Athens Friends, the Earth Justice Network, and Greenfire Eco-Village. Refreshments will be served.
