Service Project Benefits Foster Kids

"Love Luggage," a service project sponsored by a partnership between Ohio University's Center for Community Service, Rural Action and ReUse Indistries, was a complete success as this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day service project for Rural Action Americorps*VISTA members.

The Love Luggage project brought together more than 250 community and Ohio University volunteers together to hand-paint donated luggage and fill it with necessities such as toiletries, art supplies, books and toys. The pieces of luggage are to be given to more than 100 children in foster care.

Nearly half a million children in America are in foster care, and over 200 of these children live in Athens County. Foster children often have very little to call their own, and use trash bags to transport their few belongings. This project aimed to give these children a little something more to call their own.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us with the spectacular project. Keep checking the Rural Rambler for more National Volunteer day activities and other exciting volunteer opportunities!
