Action Update

Well, it has been a busy couple of weeks for us here at Rural Action. Since the last Rambler posted we have had our hands in many activities around this beautiful region. Just to keep you up to speed, this is what we’ve been up to:

Watershed Woman and Watershed Man made a triumphant return to the Indian Mounds Festival Parade on October 2nd. While they are very busy protecting our streams, they still found time to hand out candy and wave to their fans. Didn’t make it to the parade? Well, you may be able to catch them again at the Veterans Day parade. We’ll keep you posted!

The Environmental Learning Program (ELP) has been out and about this past week as well. First, they did a two-day program at Ohio University’s Energy Fair dubbed “O.U. Unplugged.” There were games, puppet shows and demonstrations for kids of all ages. Then they were seen at the Sustainability Festival this past weekend at the Athens County Fairgrounds. The ELP taught kids the virtue of recycling and taking care of our planet.

The Paul Bunyan Festival at Hocking College filled our hills with the sound of chainsaws. Despite the gloomy weather, our Sustainable Forestry program was there, sharing their knowledge and insight with the thousands of visitors that came from all over the world. Although it was cold on the outside, they sold coffee and beans to help keep everyone warm on the inside. Thanks, Forestry!

The
Appalachian Rural Housing Development Golf Scramble took place this past weekend. Seven teams of four assembled at the Forest Hills Golf Course, on Route 78 in Morgan County for a chance to win prizes ranging from free golf sessions to $10,000 for a hole in one. There were hot dogs and bratwursts to keep the teams nourished and visions of prizes to keep them motivated. While no one made the hole in one, every team walked away with prizes, a happy belly and fond memories.
